Yahoo-Mail

Yahoo-Mail needs no introduction. Anyone who has ever used Internet has heard the term ‘email’ associated with Yahoo-mail. It is practically the largest email provider on the Internet serving millions of users. Major competitors like Windows Live Hotmail, Gmail and AIM mail are no lees in terms of technology, innovation, creativity and user friendly interface, but Yahoo-mail peaked just at the right time when the Internet boom happened. Its innovative ideas, chat client, photo sharing features, chat rooms and other features were introduced at the prefect time to capture the market. Once it dominated the market there was no way it was going to loose its position. However these major competitors have made inroads into the market and at the moment we cannot say that Yahoo-mail dominates the market.

The AJAX version of Yahoo-mail is considered a complete mail client solution and is already rolled out for users to enjoy. This is now the default version replacing the classic version of Yahoo-mail. It is compatible with popular browsers such as Internet Explorer, Firefox and Camino although there are some visual problems in the layout while using Opera and Safari. The AJAX version uses the Oddpost design philosophy after it had been successfully used in Gmail. It is common knowledge that out of the most common 1024x768 screen area, just about 30% is actually dedicated to display the contents of your mail, while the rest of the space is consumed in advertising, navigation, dead space and administrative debris. The major changes from the classic version is that Yahoo-mail now offers unlimited storage of mails, increase of mail area and has got a desktop email client look complete with menu, function bars, buttons and drop-down menus, auto complete address, shortcuts to Yahoo Messenger, Yahoo Calendar and Domain Keys. However users are given the option to choose either the new version or the old one since the new version is more resource intensive and may not run well on older machines or slow intermittent Internet connections.

The popularity of Yahoo-mail has always been its comfortable navigational interface, fast loading and convenience in the free version. The paid services are of course more superior with better data backup and more facilities and preferences given in peak hours. Yahoo-mail also provides spam filters and has a very strong policy against spamming accounts. Those accounts are terminated immediately without warning or loosing more time. There are a number of techniques to decrease the threat from getting infected from spamming or malicious mails like changing certain words, which resemble scripting commands by adding an underscore to it. Yahoo-mail also gives organizations the option to bypass their filter by paying on a per mail basis.
